I originally released lava sponge around 4 years ago now and took it down as i felt it wasn't up to standards.

Configurable radius
Configurable sponge requirements ( wet or dry )
Configurable reactions ( make wet, make dry or disappear )
Configurable per world

custom block instead of sponge
faction claim support,
World guard region support,
permission only support,

Developer API:
LavaSpongeAbsorbEvent: called before the sponge has absorbed the lava.
