The full guide is posted in the GitHub wiki, alternatively you can use the example plugin (even used for testing).

Compatibility:
A main objective for this plugin is to be as backward-compatible as it could be.
For now this plugin supports every version from 1.8 because the 1.7 version doesn't have code needed by the plugin, we don't have any plans to expand the compatibility (because we don't know of anyone that uses 1.7 anymore).
